If you are thinking about pregnancy, you can speak with a healthcare professional before you start trying. A pre-pregnancy conversation helps you review existing health conditions, medicines and questions about your next steps. It is not a commitment to fertility treatment.
Busy family schedules in Coimbatore can make it tempting to postpone the visit. Preparing a few notes beforehand helps you focus on what matters to you, without assuming that everyone needs the same tests.
Start with your health history
Tell the clinician about ongoing conditions, previous pregnancies, operations, allergies and any relevant family history. Bring previous reports if you have them. If both partners can attend, shared questions about health and pregnancy planning can be discussed together.
Mention concerns about your periods or previous pregnancy complications rather than waiting until after a positive pregnancy test.
Review medicines before making changes
Bring the names and doses of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products, herbal remedies and supplements. Some treatments may need review before pregnancy, but stopping a prescribed medicine yourself can also cause harm. Ask the clinician what is safe for your situation.
Ask about folic acid before conception and in early pregnancy, including when to start and which dose is appropriate for you. WHO recommends folic acid during this period; people with certain medical histories may need a different regimen under professional guidance.
Questions to take to your visit
Use this as a starting point, not a list of tests to request:
- Do any of my health conditions or medicines need review before trying?
- What folic acid advice applies to me?
- Should my vaccination record or infection risks be reviewed?
- Are there any tests needed in my situation, and why?
- When should we ask for further advice if pregnancy does not happen?
Small everyday steps
Avoid alcohol, smoking and non-medical drug use while trying to conceive. Ask for support if making these changes is difficult. Regular meals, appropriate activity and attention to emotional wellbeing can be part of preparation; no routine guarantees pregnancy or replaces an individual assessment.
Discuss your plans close to home
Dr. Sandhya provides fertility care at MERIVA Medical Centre in Sarcarsamakulam, Coimbatore. Hours: Every day, 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM. Request a consultation and bring your questions and previous reports. The next step should depend on your circumstances, not a one-size-fits-all package.
Questions patients often ask
Does a pregnancy-planning visit mean starting IVF?
No. Pregnancy planning begins with discussion of health and circumstances. Fertility treatment is not automatically needed.
Can I stop my usual medicine while trying for a baby?
Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own. Ask your clinician to review both the medicine and the condition it treats.
